The English Showcase took place on May 13th and
14th. The event, designed to showcase the English Department and
student language abilities, was a success!
The English Teaching Assistant, accompanied by third year
students Grecia Sofía Iglesias Aburto and Mauricio Martínez Lugo, hosted the
evening’s show. Audience members saw a brief summary of what the English
Department does apart from normal classes. Extra activities include: renovating
the new classroom, preparing students for the Cambridge ESOL certification
exams, and assisting with the Sister Cities Exchange Program.
Next, the audience enjoyed a poetry recitation prepared by
Mrs. Mary Carmen Vaca and Ms. Leticia Salache. Students prepared a beautiful
interpretation of Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s famous poem, “How do I love
thee” set to music and with orchestrated movements that brought the classic
poem to life.
Finally, onlookers watched a brief video detailing the English
Department’s previous plays. After a brief introduction, the main event began:
Beauty & the Beast.
The students prepared a marvelous interpretation of the
classic fairytale. The high quality costumes, professional looking set, and
talented student actors mixed together to deliver a spectacular show. While the
acting, performed all in English, was well done, the choreography stood out as
the true gem of the show. Musical numbers such as “Gaston” and “Bonjour” are
difficult to interpret, but the crown jewel of Disney musical numbers is “Be
Our Guest.” Ms. Brenda and her dances did not disappoint. Dancing plates and
cutlery, feather dusters, servers in formal wear, a debonair Lumiere and an
energetic Belle delivered a truly professional interpretation of one of the
most beloved scenes from the musical.
